How Reliable Are Public EV Chargers in Norway?
Across the Norwegian chargers we covered in Q2 2026, chargers held a working status for 94.78% of observed time. Of the charging sessions we inferred from status changes, 86.7% came out successful. A working status is not the same claim as a completed charge, and the gap between the two is the point of this guide.

Availability and session success answer different questions
Availability asks whether a charging point reported a working status during the time Symbioen could observe it. Successful charging sessions ask whether a sequence of status changes showed credible charging activity.
The denominators differ, so the two should never be subtracted or folded into a single uptime claim. What they show together is that a station count and an availability percentage mean little until you know how charging actually ended and how fast faults were cleared.
How to use the benchmark
Use the benchmark to screen and to compare, on evidence nobody in the transaction controls. An operator can use it to show that good performance held over time. An asset owner gets more out of it the other way round — as a way to find the stations a portfolio average is quietly carrying.
- Compare networks without mixing different uptime definitions.
- Check whether expansion is accompanied by stable service.
- Find stations and municipalities that need deeper investigation.
- Keep missing evidence separate from observed failure.
What the public data cannot establish
Public status history confirms neither delivered energy nor payment completion, and it does not capture what every driver met at the charger. A station without a score is usually a station we could not see enough of. Direct verification needs operator session records, or fleet and vehicle data supplied with consent.
