How Reliable Are Public EV Chargers in Sweden?
Across the Swedish chargers we covered in Q2 2026, chargers held a working status for 95.57% of observed time. Of the charging sessions we inferred from status changes, 87.4% came out successful. Those two numbers answer different questions — a charger can look available and still fail to start or finish a charge.

Availability and session success answer different questions
Availability asks one question: did the charging point report a working status while we could see it? Session success asks another: did a run of status changes look like real charging?
The denominators differ, so subtracting one from the other produces a number that means nothing. Read them side by side instead. An availability figure left on its own starts to hide things at exactly this point.
How to use the benchmark
The benchmark puts operators, site owners, authorities and investors on the same definitions when they compare places and networks. Treat it as a screen, not a verdict: find the results that look odd or are sliding, then go down to the charging points underneath them.
- Compare operators and municipalities on a consistent basis.
- Check whether network growth is matched by dependable service.
- Prioritise weak or deteriorating stations for review.
- Compare operator-reported results with independent status evidence.
What the public data cannot establish
Public status history confirms neither delivered energy nor payment completion, and it certainly does not capture every driver’s experience. A station without a score is usually a station we could not see enough of — not a broken one, and it should never be labelled as such. Direct verification needs operator session records, or fleet and vehicle data supplied with consent.
